You gave the company six solid years. Your performance reviews were glowing, your targets were met, and then one day, you’re called in and told your role is being eliminated as part of a “cost-cutting exercise.” No warning, no performance issue cited, just a line item on a spreadsheet.

If you’ve been in this position, you’ve probably asked yourself: Do I actually have a case?

Here’s the short answer you might have. UAE labour law does allow employers to end a contract with proper notice. But giving notice and having a lawful reason to terminate are two very different things. And “cost-cutting,” on its own, doesn’t automatically tick the second box.

The Legal Basis for Termination in the UAE

Employment termination in the UAE is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Employment Relations, together with Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022.
